About Us
Sports cardiology has emerged as a unique and indispensable medical sub-specialty, but very few physicians and institutions across the country have the knowledge, skill and experience to deliver high quality cardiovascular evaluations of athletes. Most physicians are ill prepared to interpret athlete imaging studies or determine if athlete risk is present and there are no current educational opportunities to sharpen those skills that focus on elite and professional athletes. Evaluation, diagnosis, and management of athletes to determine the presence of risk in elite and professional athletes is an unmet educational need in the United States.
Despite the proven benefits of exercise on cardiovascular health, physical activity in those with acquired or genetic cardiovascular disease may lead to cardiac symptoms and an increased risk of acute cardiac events e.g., aortic dissection, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac arrest. Vigorous physical training results in adaptive changes in the heart’s structure and rhythm, the so-called Athlete Heart. These changes are often revealed on ECGs and echocardiograms and may mimic pathologic patterns that are associated with increased cardiac risk. The distinction between normal and abnormal can be challenging and can lead to both overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis of cardiac conditions. A key concern for those caring for young athletes is being able to recognize athletes at risk for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Most elite and professional athletes with sudden cardiac arrest are the result of inherited structural cardiac abnormalities that have previously been undetected or misdiagnosed. Therefore, it is important that physicians understand alterations associated with expected athletic physiologic changes of the Athlete Heart and distinguish it from pathological conditions. Over diagnosis leads to unnecessary removal from sports and under diagnosis puts patients at risk for adverse cardiac events. Detection of players at increased cardiac risk utilizing pre-participation screening is now employed for all prospective and current professional athletes. Most amateur elite sports organizations including the Olympics, NCAA and elite level high school sports have the same process. The addition of cardiac specific screening to the pre-participation exam has been proposed as a measure to improve detection of athletes with high-risk cardiac abnormalities. However, studies suggest that many physicians do not have the knowledge to properly evaluate an athlete’s ECG, diagnostic imaging and other tests which can lead to false positive results and, in some cases, missed diagnosis. All athletes with or without known cardiac risk may have sudden cardiac arrest. There are best practices for management of acute sudden cardiac arrest in athletes that require mastery with continuous updates to maintain maximum athlete safety. In addition, many athletes with a known diagnosis of cardiac disease are opting to continue to play and require expert level evaluations to determine their ongoing individual risk and develop a safety plan. Gathering and sharing those best practices is best accomplished in an educational environment. As the Sports Cardiologist becomes an integral part of the sports medical team, this course will serve to educate those who are asked to fill the role.
